Sustainably
Managed
Australian
Regional
Timbers
A new co-operative marketing structure for selling small-scale
landholders and farmers timber, which will maximise returns
by entering into strategic alliances with furniture industry processors,
while ensuring the consumer receives personalised service, quality
assurance and a guarantee that the timber is sustainably sourced.
Good for the landholder, the community and the environment.
Thats smart thinking!
The Concept
Many farmers and small-scale landholders are growing a wide range
of wonderful native trees and local species that are unknown and unappreciated.
In central Victoria, farm foresters have
combined to set up a co-operative
SMARTimbers,which stands for Sustainably
Managed Australian Regional Timbers.
The co-operative will market small
quantities of their unique eucalypts and
wattles, casuarinas or cypress, for high
quality furniture or appearance products.
The co-operatives treegrower members
love and care for their plantations and
bush. To demonstrate that this is more
than rhetoric, SMARTimbers members
are signing on to comply with individually
prepared Environmental Management
Systems (EMS) for their farms. Independently
audited, the EMS farm plans will guarantee
that the growers have not only the will,
but also the skills to manage their trees
sustainably, as well as achieve a high
quality product.
